Go from “I don’t know what to write” to “Man, I got a lot to write”.
Writing is easy.
But coming up with ideas to write about is tough.
You want to write consistently.
But every day when you open your laptop to write an article, you have to stare at the blinking cursor for hours before typing a word.
Believe me, I have been there.
I was struggling every day to come up with an idea to write about.
But now, I have never missed a single day of writing for the last 6 months.
How?
Because I cultivate 3 habits that are helping me generate infinite content ideas.
And I want to share those amazing habits with you today.
Once you cultivate these 3 habits, you’ll not struggle to come up with ideas, but you will struggle to find time to write about all the ideas you’ll generate.
Here are the 3 habits:
1) Read and take notes
If you are not reading books every day.
What the hell are you doing, brother?
If you want to write online every day, you MUST read every day — at least for 20 minutes.
Reading is input, and writing is output.
There is no output without input.
So start reading.
But don’t read passively.
When reading, you should have a notetaking app open on your laptop or a notebook beside you.
Take notes while reading.
If you read a line that is interesting, relatable, or sparks an emotion, immediately write it down.
Don’t write the exact words as in the book.
Write it in your own words.
Not only with books.
Make sure to take notes while listening to the podcast or watching an educational YouTube video.
All those notes come in handy when you sit down to write.
Make sure you take all your notes in a common place.
The second habit is my favorite.
2) Journal
Writing is something you do for your audience.
But journaling is personal — you do it for yourself.
When journaling, there is no restriction.
You can be as open as possible.
You don’t have to worry about anything.
You don’t have to worry about grammar, structure, using difficult words, spelling, anything…
It’s just you writing for you.
When you’re open and don’t have any restrictions, ideas will flow out of you like a river breaking through a dam.
Once you finish journaling.
Look through it. You will find some amazing ideas.
Grab those ideas and store them somewhere.
Store all your ideas in one place — it’s your idea bank.
By idea bank, I mean the place you save all your ideas.
It can be a notebook or a notetaking app like Notion, Google Keep, or Apple Notes.
When you don’t know what to write. Open your idea bank and grab an idea, and start writing about it.
If you’ve never journaled before. Start today.
You’ll come up with so many amazing ideas.
The third habit is…
3) Capture ideas throughout the day
Use a notetaking app or the notepad on your mobile.
Whenever you get an idea, don’t ignore it and think to yourself that you’ll remember it yourself.
Because you won’t.
Just capture it immediately.
Make this a habit.
Also, keep this in mind: there will be days when no ideas will flow. And there will be days, ideas will just keep flowing.
So don’t worry if ideas are not coming.
That’s normal.
But make this a habit.
I’ve a notetaking app called Kortex on my homescreen.
Whenever an idea pops up, I immediately capture it.
Mostly, I get amazing ideas in between sets in the gym.
During walks.
When lying in bed trying to sleep.
When taking a shower. I don’t take my phone to the bathroom. But I’ll write down the ideas immediately after coming out of the bathroom.
Cultivate these 3 habits if you are serious about writing.
Because if you have these 3 habits.
Whenever you sit down to write, you never have to stare at a blank screen.
You can simply open your idea bank, grab an idea, and start writing about it.
It’s as simple as that.
I hope this article was helpful.
