If you want to become mentally strong.
Do these 3 things:
1) Resist temptations
Every temptation you get is an opportunity for you to build mental strength.
When you feel like scrolling on Instagram, eating chocolate, watching porn, or playing video games.
Resist.
It’s not going to be easy. You’ll keep on losing to your temptations. But don’t give up. Resist every day.
If you resist every day, your urges start to get weaker, and your willpower starts to get stronger.
And at one point, you’ll have complete control over your mind.
You’ll become someone who can easily avoid all the temptations that most people are addicted to.
2) Do something difficult every day
I do something difficult every single day.
Even now, I’m writing.
This is not an easy thing to do.
Every day, I sit down and open my laptop without knowing what I’m gonna write about.
I stare at the screen for half an hour. Then I scroll through my old articles to find some ideas. Open the ideas I captured in my second brain. But my brain still stays blank.
Then I start typing random stuff. Immediately delete them and go for a walk.
I come back still not knowing what to write. Then by some miracle, I end up writing something like this.
This is hard. I decided that I’ll write consistently no matter what.
Even when it is difficult, I don’t quit.
Instead, I try to find a way to get it done.
You should also do something difficult every day if you want to become mentally strong.
It doesn’t have to be writing.
You can go for a 1km run. You can do 100 push-ups. You can read 50 pages. It can be anything that’s difficult for you.
When you do what’s difficult for you every day, at one point, it gets easy. Which is a sign that you’ve become mentally strong.
That’s why it got easy.
3) Embrace discomfort
Most people are addicted to comfort.
When the alarm rings at 5 AM, they turn it off and go back to sleep.
Because it’s comfortable.
Waking up and going for a run is not. It sucks. It’s uncomfortable.
When it’s time to study, instead of opening the book, they open Instagram and procrastinate.
Because studying is uncomfortable. It’s mentally challenging. But scrolling is comfortable.
To build mental strength, you need to always choose what’s uncomfortable.
You have two choices when the alarm goes off at 5 am.
You can turn it off and do something productive first thing in the morning. Or you can snooze and go back to sleep.
What you choose may not make a huge difference in the short term, but in the long term, it does.
Every early morning you utilize will compound and help you achieve your goals faster. Every early morning you waste compounds too — in regret.
Choose discomfort.
Become comfortable being uncomfortable.
