I was trapped by the YouTube algorithm.
I know I need to study. I know I need to go to the gym. I know I need to write.
But I was not able to put my phone down.
I was wasting so much time on YouTube, and I wasn’t able to focus on what’s actually important.
I decided to break this addiction no matter what.
I disabled YouTube on my phone.
But it didn’t help.
I started watching YouTube videos via Chrome.
I deleted Chrome. It didn’t help either.
After a few hours, I would install it again and start watching YouTube.
I felt bad inside for doing it, but I wasn’t able to control myself.
During this time, I read a quote that said:
Out of sight, out of mind.
That’s when I realized.
Deleting YouTube or Chrome is stupid. Because they are going to be always available on my phone, and I can install them anytime I want.
So the root cause of my addiction wasn’t YouTube…it was my phone.
The quote said, out of sight, out of mind. So I cultivate a new habit.
Every day after coming home from college. I would keep my phone in the living room (near the TV stand).
I don’t take my phone with me to my room. If I get a call, I would go to the living room, take the call, and then keep the phone right there again and go back to my room. (Yes, I started using my phone like a landline.)
Every day, I would be sitting in my room with crippling boredom. The urge to go out and grab my phone will be extremely strong.
But I resisted it.
Not gonna lie, some days I failed. My urge won over my willpower.
But most days, I resisted.
As I kept resisting every day, I became good at controlling my urges.
When I’m in my room without my phone, I start doing random stuff.
Like, drawing something on a piece of paper, reading a book, counting the number of tiles in my room, arranging my wardrobe, organizing my already organized desk, playing with my water bottle, etc.
In fact, the cripping boredom made studying look fun. I started to study. I became productive.
I didn’t try to be productive, but just keeping my phone out of my sight made me do productive stuff.
If you’re struggling with YouTube addiction or phone addiction in general.
Keep your phone out of sight.
That’s what helped me. Hope it will help you too.
And let me say this again. I’ll be tough initially. The first few days will feel like hell.
But if you keep resisting your urges every day, you’ll eventually be able to break the addiction.
Hope it was helpful, see you again.

P.S. YouTube is a great place to learn. But most people don’t use it for that. Don’t be like most people.
